DEP and Season of Mist

Written by Adrian Clement. Filed under Record Labels. No comments.

According to an announcement on Ben Weinman’s twitter account, The Dillinger Escape Plan’s new record will be released on their own record label in association with French metal label Season of Mist, which has been responsible for releases by the likes of Blood Duster, Jarboe, Cynic, Necrophagist, Gorgoroth and Mayhem.

Ben is Answering Your Questions…

Written by Adrian Clement. Filed under Ben Weinman. 1 Comment.

…over at SMN News Forums for the next couple of days. Better get in quick!

Here are some questions answered already:

Will you post the demos?
and
Will you post Gregs audition tape?

No. Greg called me first thing this morning and asked me if i lost my mind. You will see some practice footage vid soon though with us jamming and prob breaking shit in my house.

any mustache growing advice? im just not getting it down.

I am not a hairy man. More like a man boy actually. All our bass players have been very hairy. Adam actually could look like a werewolf if he didnt shave and painted his nose black. Sometimes I think Liam is wearing a fur coat when he has his shirt off but then I realize he is vegan. Me… I’m just too busy to shave.

On this album are there going to be the catchy songs like on Ire Works.

Haven’t really gotten to that point yet. I always have a lot of that stuff already written in my head and then its just a matter of whether we use it or not. AT the moment everything sounds the very opposite of Catchy.

What direction is DEP going, in terms of songwriting, and what do you plan to accomplish with this album? Can you describe the feel of the songs so far?

Also, when will we know the name of the album?!

refer to the last question I answered. Name of album will be revealed in a press release in the next few days.

For once, I’m really glad I actually got woken up by your twitter haha.

How do I grow up to be awesome as you are?

In all seriousness, has your full vision of Dillinger come to fruition yet or are we just hitting the tip of the iceberg?

Also, what’s going on with the label thing? Are you guys still on relapse or you doing some NIN type shit now?

you got a lot of questions haha. Well for one I’m not grown up. I am a dude who actually has hurt his asshole because he was trying to make a fart as loud as I possibly could in a public place and pushed too hard.

I take dillinger day by day. I’m pretty happy with what we have done. NOt every song has always come out exactly the way I wanted and we have not always made the right decisions along the way but i can say that we have pretty much maintained an overall ethic that im very proud of.

We are off relapse and will be doing things all kinds of ways now that we have 100% control of the business side of things. Trent has def been an inspiration on that front.

Any candidates on a full time replacement for asian steve? that knife the glitter dude was only for the interim right..someone back me up on that?

Yeah Kevin from KTG is a good friend and we are psyched to take him to Europe with us. He runs Backroom studios though so prob couldn’t do that much touring in the future. When you say replace Asian steve do you mean get a new guitar tech or get another dude that we give a name, make famous, and then goes and techs for a band that plays to a dat and doesn’t plug in? Anyway, we wish him luck and a lot of teen poon. We are not really worried about filling the position for now as we will not be full time touring until fall.

Are we to excpect a new Direction musicly speaking?
Are you the type of band that tries to “reinvent” themselfs?
And are you going to tour South America anytime?
Are planning to kill some kitties on the new album and record it?

I can’t really answer the direction question. We just try and make jams that at least we think kicks the shit out of every other band doing anything remotely similar to us and then actually write a few songs we would actually listen too haha. OF course that is just our opinion.

You must be aware that there are alot of bands that are heavily influenced by DEP. Have you found any of them that you like or think are good? if so, who?

I don’t really listen to this type of music so I have no idea but that totally contradicts the answer to the last question about what direction we are going in which should totally make you all realize that I am talking out of my ass right now. In fact. I dont have an ipod or a cd player. And I bashed in my car stereo with a drum stick. So I really don’t listen to anything that someone else doesn’t play for me.

Are you sticking with Steve Evetts?

Are you going to do an internet only release, or will there be a tangible copy for the new album?

Have you written any new material that will be played in the upcoming tour?

Favorite band at the moment?

Steve is scheduled to do the record unless he cant for some reason then I will prob just do it myself. AT the moment not everyone has heard the new songs so not sure if we can get them going fast enough to play but maybe.
fav band is the new dillinger songs because thats all i hear all day. but we prob suck

hey Ben- I saw you’ve been doing some remixing (weezy, word.) and obviously you are sick at programming drums- what’s the word with that remix EP you guys hinted at?? will you be doing some, if not many? also- how about providing the “stems” so to speak…

also- did you guys attempt to contact the peeps behind that badass-looking johnny depp Dillinger movie? seeing as how you were already on underworld, that movie could only be better by having a chase/tommy gun scene scored to Running Board….

I will prob do one. It’s going to be pretty rad I think. We will prob put some stems up of the new record. Also have midi drums for ire works I would like to give to some peeps who are into that stuff. Never contacted the dillinger movie peeps. WE dont really aggressively try and do anything other then make music and play shows. Prob why we will never be a huge band. hummm any of you want to make some calls for us?

I doubt you know this yet but will there be any guest vocalists on this record like there was on Ire Works?

prob will be

Is it possible for me to buy you a drink if you ever come to Edmonton?

Do you like vegan sloppy joes?

I dont drink but ill take the food bro

I heard the dudes from Meshuggah taught you to program drums with DFH and Cubase. Are you writing the drum parts for the new stuff yourself, or are you letting Rymer do it?

they didnt teach me to use it but introduced me to the program and answered a few questions for me. Those guys are next level man. I have been writing a lot of the drum parts but Rymer is starting to pull some shit out that is ridiculous and his drum and bass type playing is adding some insane elements to our sound. He is much more aggressive then any drummer we have ever played with and I can’t even believe how quickly he is learning the beats I have given him. WE are super lucky to have found him.

Do you accept non-alcoholic beverages? And/or hands in friendship?

I only drink water and coffee. Mostly just the water that is in coffee though.

Any plans for more side projects/contributions to albums like the recent Ephel Duath album?

Any stand out elements in the new album such as the more electronic feel of Ire Works, also anything on the release similar to the When Acting/Nong Eye Gong set of songs?

Faith No More and DEP tour make it happen brah!

Can I have a job? I work for cheap.

So far what stands out is the more metal note choice. Very thrash. But still dillinger if that makes any sense. I’m sure some of my electronic or piano oriented stuff may make an appearance. Billy’s pissed off aggressive playing is def pushing things. I can’t wait to hear what Greg does with this stuff though. I’m sure he is going to be on another level. He is ready to explode.

Faith No More asked us to play their headline shows in Europe but we cant do it. I want to shoot myself in the tip of my dick. Maybe we can get on some later this summer or in the fall if they do anymore.

YOu can come water my fucking plants and pet my dog if you want.

oh and yeah ill be doing side project stuff. All kinds of stuff. And still doing remixes periodically.

Have you ever considered putting up all the tracks to songs so people could remix them like NIN does?

And will you ever make tabs to your songs? I made a power tab for ‘Sunshine the Werewolf’ http://powertabs.net/tablature.php?id=29151. I’m not sure how good it is.

Lastly, any tips for an aspiring guitarist/composer of crazy music that everybody seems to hate? For instance, what kind of exercises do you work on for speed and accuracy?

I dont think i will ever personally make tabs. I have turned down some tab books and instructional video offers. I’m not really into that kind of thing. I really think its great that people are out there tabbing this stuff though and figuring it out.

In the past, you guys have put out some pretty awesome vinyl: the backwards playing 7″, calculating picture disc, and Ire works on grey being my personal favs… now that you’re splitting from relapse are there any plans for the new record on wax? And aesthetically speaking, what has been your favorite DEP release?

Yeah we will do more cool stuff like that. The packaging for the next record is going to be out of control. Just wait till you see it.

Ire works is up there I have to say. Everyone is special in it’s own way. Kind of like ex girlfriends or some shit. Got to love all them different titties

Poll on Metal Hammer

Written by Adrian Clement. Filed under Vote. 2 Comments.

As Ben has alerted everyone over at Twitter, there is a poll on Metal Hammer where you can vote for Dillinger. The question is: Which album are you looking forward to the most in 2009?

The choices are:

Baroness

DevilDriver

Slayer

Megadeth

Anthrax

Dillinger Escape Plan

Airbourne

And you can go and vote here.

Gee, I didn’t know Slayer had a new record coming out. Christ Illusion was pretty decent, plus it meant a return for Dave Lombardo. Personally, I’m looking forward to listening to new albums by people such as Secret Chiefs 3, Sunn O))), Big Business, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Sonic Youth and Om. And so far I have really enjoyed new albums by P.O.S., Dalek, Zu, Lawrence English, Ephel Duath, Isis, Mastodon, Seaworthy, Locrian, Mono, Animal Collective, Xasthur, Wino and Wolves in the Throne Room (talk about name dropping).

What about everyone here? What records are you looking forward to and which records have you heard so far that you like?

Rising Pulse Clearance

Written by Adrian Clement. Filed under Rising Pulse Records, Spylacopa. No comments.

Rising Pulse have a clearance section on their online store, and they’re selling some Spylacopa merch for a reduced price (selected sizes). Don’t forget you can still pick up their EP that came out last year, as well as other t-shirts and promotional posters. Additionally, I see they’re also supplying an old 7” split with Souvenir’s Young America, which you can buy as a combo or on its own. The PayPal links to purchase that are on Spylacopa’s MySpace.

And last but not least, if you’re Twitter savvy make sure you follow Rising Pulse, who have now joined forces with the dark side.
